What's Happening Across Africa
- Coerced Labor: Coerced labor is work that is obtained through force, threat, or deception. It can include various forms of exploitation, such as slavery, human trafficking, and forced labor. Coerced labor is a crime that violates the human rights of the workers, who are often subjected to harsh conditions and receive little or no recompense. U.S. federal law defines forced labor as work or service that is exacted from any person under the menace of any penalty and without their consent.
- Human Trafficking: Human trafficking is the trade of humans for the purpose of forced labour, sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation. Human trafficking can occur within a country or trans-nationally. It is distinct from people smuggling, which is characterized by the consent of the person being smuggled.
- Terrorism: Terrorism, in its broadest sense, is the use of violence against non-combatants to achieve political or ideological aims. The term is used in this regard primarily to refer to intentional violence during peacetime or in the context of war against non-combatants (mostly civilians and neutral military personnel).
- Lack of Human Rights: Human rights issues are prevalent across the globe, with concerns documented in 155 countries. Key challenges include assaults on universal freedoms, racism, economic crises, climate change, online hate, and the impact of artificial intelligence.
